Neighborhood Update

National Night Out Review:

There were a number of gatherings throughout our neighborhood last Tuesday evening observing National Night Out event. The weather cooperated (albeit too HOT), and most folks seemed to enjoy themselves. The VBPD representatives never quite made it into our neighborhood, as they normally would. That is somewhat disappointing. Apparently there were service calls to handle, and there was a larger gathering that they chose to attend over at Virginia Wesleyan. But, we still had a good time and the intent of National Night Out was fulfilled. Sam compiled photos submitted from the various groups around the neighborhood. They are posted here

Storm Water Ditch Erosion:

The ongoing erosion of the storm water ditch  between Lake Smith Terrace and Lakeview Shores is receiving serious attention by the city. Our two civic leagues have jointly worked to move the city’s public works engineers to facilitate a permanent repair to the serious long-term erosion and subsistence affecting properties on Five Forks Court and along Lakeview Drive in Lakeview Shores. There were many factors that delayed this project, but we are hopeful it is back on track to be vigorously addressed.

Election Officials Needed:

The Office of Virginia Beach Voter Registration and Elections has openings for individuals to serve as election officials (formerly called poll workers) in the upcoming November 8th election.

Our election system is a cornerstone of a Representative Republic form of government. It is envied by most other countries. To make it work, ordinary citizens come together a couple of times each year to manage the election process in precincts throughout the cities and counties across the country. Virginia Beach has 100 voting precincts, soon to be 108. Each one is staffed by a team consisting of a chief election official, an assistant chief, and eight to twelve election officials. All take a sworn oath to conduct the election according to law and the best of their ability. This team works together to execute a secure and accurate election day process. Election day is a long but rewarding day.

We need citizens willing to step up and serve as election officials. It only requires a couple of days each year to fulfill this important role. There is typically a primary election in June, and a general election in November.

To be considered for a role as an election official, applicants must meet the following basic requirements:

  • A U.S. citizen at least 18 years of age and a registered voter in the Commonwealth of Virginia
  • Not hold an elected office or be an employee of an elected official
  • Must be available to work the entire election day
  • Must have a courteous, professional, and helpful attitude
  • Must be able speak, read, and write English
  • Must have patience.

Election officials are paid $162 for working on election day, plus $20 for attending a required three-hour training class conducted prior to election day.

Are you ready to sign up to serve in this crucial role? If yes, please contact the Office of Voter Registration and Elections at 757-385-8683 or email voter@vbgov.com

If you’re not sure or have any questions regarding working on election day, please call Civic League President John Eason at 757-642-4844. John has worked as an election official, assistant chief, and chief election official in Virginia Beach for the past 17 years, and he is glad to answer any questions or concerns you may have about the position.

Looking Forward:

As we pass through the dog days of August we are looking ahead to the next edition of the Lake Smith Ripples newsletter. It should be coming to your doorstep shortly after the first of September. Our next civic league meeting (September 20th) will be a joint meeting with the Thoroughgood civic league where we will have presentations by our District 9 school board candidates in the November election. Two days later, on September 22nd Thoroughgood and our civic league will jointly host a meeting with presentations by our District 9 city council candidates in the November election.  These will be important meetings you don’t want to miss.

Student Representative:

We still have an opening for a student representative on the civic league’s board. If you have a high school level student interested in obtaining volunteer hours serving with the civic league board, please contact John Eason at 757-642-4844 or by email: jeason913@verizon.net
